I GET AROUND. To ride India’s most luxurious train. To stay up all night in Buenos Aires’ hippest neighborhood. To do nothing at all in the exclusive West Indies island of Mustique. To drink yak butter tea in China’s remote Yunnan province. To document New Orleans’ comeback. And so on.

A few examples:

George RR Martin was a fledgling novelist when he moved to Santa Fe in 1979. Today, the New Jersey native and creator of Game of Thrones is rich and famous and spending his own millions to create new, artsy attractions in his adopted, high desert town. I visited Martin at his home to talk about that and about his favorite spot for green chile.

Philadelphia can make you cry. Or, at least, it nearly made me teary after visiting its monuments to the past — like the new Museum of the American Revolution or the old Tomb of the Unknown Revolutionary War Soldier.
